ChatGPT app for Android reportedly getting new home screen widgets

ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot launched by OpenAI, will reportedly provide a home screen widget for Android. The report comes amid a surge in the release of generative AI tools. Google recently launched Gemini version 1.5, and Copilot will reportedly get the default Assistant feature on Android. Bhavish Aggarwal’s startup Krutrim has also launched its platform in public beta. With the help of this widget, OpenAI will increase the accessibility of its applications.

Informant Mishaal Rahman shares detail About this development on X (formerly Twitter). He said: “ChatGPT for Android now has a home screen widget. The widget has shortcuts to send text/image/voice queries or initiate conversation mode.” It is worth noting that this feature is currently in beta and not yet available to the public open.

Rahman also shared a screenshot of the widget, which revealed more details. The home screen widgets appear to be in a 4×2 grid style. For reference, it’s as wide as the Google Search widget but twice as tall. There is a text field for writing queries and prompts, with four icons below it. These icons allow users to upload images, click on images, turn on voice input mode and the option to receive spoken responses.

These are the most commonly used features on the app, and unless the user wants to explore GPT or use advanced features, the widget should suffice. The main benefit of this widget is that users can launch the application for quick queries without taking up the full screen. This means users are free to multi-task while generating responses.

Earlier this month, OpenAI added a new feature to ChatGPT that adds long-term memory for AI applications. With this feature, users can ask the AI assistant to remember their preferred paper length, writing style, where they work, whether they own a business, and more. OpenAI emphasizes that users will have full control over the feature and can turn the memory on or off according to their preference. When memory is turned off, ChatGPT will not create or use memory. Alternatively, users can use the ad-hoc chat feature to have conversations with no memory or history.
