Despite receiving regulatory advice in 2014 on protecting donations from extremist misconduct, the Commission found that trustees had failed to implement sufficient social media controls.

In October 2024, the Charity Commission ordered the trustees to direct to take action on the use of their website and social media charity, including all the content reviews on their website and social media platforms.

Joshua Furbridge, the head of compliance trips and inspections in the Commission, said: “The reputation of a charity can be severely damaged in a moment through the careless use of social media.

“Our investigation concluded that the conduct of the trustees fell down from the required standards from them.

“Inadequate control on social media inspired to share harmful materials, and there is no excuse to fail to properly review the material before being shared by a charity.

“Our Swift intervention, which included an official warning and a legal order, requires specific action, which outlines the Commission’s firm commitment to ensure charity in supporting or glorifying terrorism.”
