Guwahati, Nov 19 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday made serious allegations about the circumstances that contributed to late singer Zubeen Garg’s long struggles before his death, and said the ongoing investigation has revealed evidence that shows he was deliberately intoxicated by people around him to usurp his property.
Speaking to reporters in Nalbari, Sarma said investigators have found “explosive details” indicating that some people close to the singer used to supply liquor regularly with the intention of manipulating him and misusing his earnings.
The Chief Minister claimed, “In order to loot Zubeen Garg’s property, he was made to drink liquor. Some people made him drink liquor and exploited him. The investigation has revealed many explosive information.”
Sarma further said that, contrary to the popular image of the singer, Zubin was not a drinker by choice. Instead, he was allegedly pushed to get drunk during programs and demonstrations by those who stood to benefit financially.
Citing a specific incident, the Chief Minister said that during a Bihu programme, a committee had paid Rs 5 lakh to Zubin for his performance, but he was convinced in his drunken state that he had received only Rs 2.5 lakh.
“He was drunk and believed so and that is how a certain group plied him with liquor and robbed him,” Sarma said.
He said that his personal interactions with the singer do not reflect people’s perception that Zubeen regularly consumes alcohol.
Sarma said, “Whenever Zubeen came to me in the morning, he was never drunk. The things he said in the evening were only because he was given alcohol.” He said this claim was supported by details revealed in the investigation into the death.
Urging the public not to link the singer’s legacy to alcohol addiction, Sarma said the upcoming chargesheet would provide more clarity.
He said, “I request the public not to associate Zubin with alcohol. I have met Zubin more than 50 times in my life; he was never drunk. The charge sheet will reveal more.”
Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most iconic musicians and cultural figures, passed away earlier this year, sparking widespread public debate and demands for transparency regarding the events surrounding his death.
While the investigation is still ongoing, officials have indicated that the filing of the charge sheet will shed significant light on what happened during the last phase of his life.
