Chardham Yatra will end with the closing of the doors of Badrinath temple on Tuesday.

The doors of the Badrinath temple in the upper Garhwal region of Uttarakhand will be closed for the winter at 2.56 pm on Tuesday, marking the formal end of this year’s Char Dham Yatra.

Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee officials on Monday said the doors of three of the four temples in the Garhwal Himalaya have already been closed.

The portals of Gangotri were closed on October 22, the day of Diwali, on the occasion of Annakoot, while the Kedarnath and Yamunotri temples were closed a day later.

Due to heavy snowfall and severe cold during winter in the high Himalayan regions, all four temples are closed every year in October–November and reopened in April–May the next year.

Chardham Yatra, which lasts for about six months, is considered the backbone of the state’s economy.

This year, around 5.1 million pilgrims from India and abroad have participated in the Char Dham Yatra, including 2.74 lakh pilgrims who visited Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara.

According to data released by the state tourism department, till Sunday this year, 6.44 lakh pilgrims visited Yamunotri, 7.58 lakh visited Gangotri, 17.68 lakh visited Kedarnath and 16.47 lakh visited Badrinath.
