With the latest earnings, the total revenue collected through scrap disposal from 2021 has increased to approx ₹4,100 crore, News18 reports.
The October amount is more than the cost of India’s lunar mission Chandrayaan-3. ₹615 crore.
Cleanliness campaign frees up record government office space
The annual one-month operation, held from October 2 to October 31, was the largest exercise ever.
Officials cleaned 232 lakh square feet of office areas – the highest ever – while 29 lakh old physical files were permanently deleted. According to News18, the outreach covered 11.58 lakh government workplaces across the country.
The initiative was coordinated by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DAR&PG) in collaboration with 84 central ministries, departments and foreign missions.

Union ministers Mansukh Mandaviya, K Rammohan Naidu and Dr Jitendra Singh reportedly monitored the nationwide effort.
Five years, five campaigns and record scrap sales
From 2021 to 2025, the government implemented five annual waste-solution programs focusing on improving sanitation and administrative efficiency.
Cumulatively, these drives have covered 23.62 lakh government offices, released 928.84 lakh square feet of workplace, disposed or digitized 166.96 lakh files, and generated revenue. News18 reports that ₹4,097.24 crore through scrap sales.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly consistently encouraged ministries to adopt time-bound targets under the campaign, emphasizing efficiency and clean governance.
The government is pitching the program as a mechanism to improve public services while cutting waste.
