An Easter egg hunt at a cemetery has been canceled after a backlash on social media.
The event is due to take place at Wrexham Cemetery next Wednesday.
The Friends of Wrexham Cemetery said it was a “great idea to get young people interested in local genealogy”.
According to its website, the organization’s aim is to “promote the conservation, care and improvement of Wrexham Cemetery as a place of historic interest and interest and as a community green space of public benefit”.
Respond to backlash social mediaThe group said the part of the cemetery to be used “is already occupied by deceased persons from a century ago and will not affect any recent interments”.
They say children do not “climb to the grave.”
They added: “I don’t understand why anyone would be angry about children enjoying outdoor spaces, which should be encouraged.”
Some people argued on social media that the event was inappropriate, with some saying they had relatives buried there.
One person said: “I can understand the idea of encouraging people to visit, but the Easter egg hunt is no excuse.”
Another added: “I think this is completely disrespectful and certainly not a good idea.”

The organization said in a later statement that it had made the “urgent decision” to cancel the event “in order to protect the young people who will be attending.”
