Maharatan PSU company Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has emerged as the largest steel supplier for the prestigious Zojila tunnel project in Jammu and Kashmir, the Steel Ministry said in a statement on Monday.
This ambitious, under-construction project is set to become India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel.
The cell has been deployed as an important partner for the initiative of this strategic infrastructure, which has been supplied more than 31,000 tonnes of steel, including TMT re-bar, structural and plates.
The company’s constant supply of steel for this project, as it moves towards its completion of 2027, underlines its unwavering commitment.
This contribution to the Zojila tunnel strengthens the long-standing heritage of Nation-Building.
The ministry’s statement said, “Like the Zojila tunnel, mega-projects continuously rely on the reliability and strength of the cell’s steel, it has an important role in shaping the future of the company and India for the dedication of the company.”
Strategically located at an altitude of 11,578 feet, it is being constructed in the challenging Himalayan region.
More than 30 kilometers of tunnels will provide important all-visitor connectivity between Srinagar and Leh via Dras and Kargil.
The tunnel is an important part of the development of the national infrastructure of India, especially the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway, and will significantly increase civil and military mobility in the region.
