New Delhi, October 13 (IANS) A special CBI court on Monday sentenced two convicts to life imprisonment in the murder of software engineer Ankit Chauhan in Noida in 2015. An officer gave this information.
The special CBI court accepted the CBI charges against Shashank Jadon and Manoj Kumar and sentenced them to life imprisonment and imposed fines of Rs 70,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively.
The sentencing decision by the special court comes after the two were convicted on September 20 for murdering Chauhan in Noida Sector 76 on April 13, 2015. The victim was shot in his Fortuner car by unknown persons.
On the instructions of the Allahabad High Court, the CBI took over the investigation of this gruesome murder and registered a new case on June 14, 2016.
After detailed investigation, the CBI unearthed the crime and arrested the accused persons, Shashank Jadon and Manoj Kumar, on June 1, 2017 and June 2, 2017, respectively.
The charge sheet was filed against the accused for the offenses of murder, attempt to dacoity, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence before the jurisdictional court of Ghaziabad on August 29, 2017.
The hearing of the case was shifted from Ghaziabad to New Delhi by the Supreme Court on August 2, 2019.
Jadon, a former student of Delhi College of Engineering, had claimed before the Noida Police that he was given the contract to rob a car by a person named Satyapal.
The techie’s murder, just 34 days after her marriage, had given rise to conspiracy theories about the alleged role of her relatives in the gruesome murder on a Noida street.
During the investigation, CBI had announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for anyone providing clues about the murder.
Ankit’s father Dharamveer Chauhan had accused the state police of lapses in investigation and had filed a petition in the high court to transfer the case to the federal investigation agency.
