In a letter sent Monday to Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantisThe bishops wrote, “Such a pause would show a decent respect humanity Of these families. “Now is not the time to be insensitive to the pain caused by immigration enforcement.”
Responding to the appeal, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said Tuesday, “President Trump was elected based on his promise to the American people to deport criminal illegal aliens. And he’s keeping that promise.”
A spokesman for DeSantis had no immediate comment.
Trump’s Administration Has launched an aggressive immigration crackdown in the past year, leading to the apprehension and deportation of immigrants described by the president as dangerous criminals.
Policy changes include rescinding limits on arrests near sensitive locations such as churches, hospitals and schools, as well as the deployment of federal agents across the US to intensify these operations.

Despite the administration’s insistence on targeting criminals, government data indicate an increase in arrests of individuals whose only alleged crime is an immigration violation, a trend not seen in the previous administration. While public questions over the crackdown are likely to arise, the administration is reportedly planning to expand its efforts in the new year.
The petition by Florida bishops comes a month after a rare condemnation of the Trump administration’s immigration policies by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which called for “meaningful immigration reform.”
Pope Leo also condemned the mistreatment of immigrants in October.
