- The estate of a Connecticut mother is suing OpenAI, alleging that its ChatGPIT chatbot played a role in her murder by paralyzing her son.
- 83-year-old Suzanne Adams was killed by her son, 56-year-old Steen-Erik Soelberg, who committed suicide after ChatGPT allegedly validated his paranoid beliefs about her.
- The lawsuit claims that ChatGPT exacerbated Soelberg’s existing mental health struggles, suggested that a printer in his mother’s house was a surveillance device and confirmed his belief in ‘the digital code underlay of the Matrix.’
- Jay Adelson, an attorney representing Adams’ estate, said it is the first lawsuit of its kind holding OpenAI responsible for risks to the public, seeking compensation for wrongful death and negligence.
- OpenAI described the situation as ‘incredibly heartbreaking’ and said it was reviewing the court filings, as well as working to improve ChatGPT’s training to recognize and respond to signs of mental distress.
