Carney today met with three Metis groups on major projects bills

Ottawa – Prime Minister Mark Carney is ready to meet today with three provincial Métis groups to discuss the law of major projects of his government.

The law allows the cabinet to give federal approval for large industrial projects, which are considered in the national interest bypassing environmental protection and other laws.

Carney is expected to join Alberta’s Metis Nation, Suscachewan’s Metis Nation and Ontario’s Metis Nation.

The Manitoba Matis Federation, which represents the Red River Metis, rejected an invitation to attend the meeting on Wednesday, stating that inviting Metis Nation of Ontario reduces the integrity of the assembly and puts the government’s plans at risk for large projects.

The Manitoba Matis Federation says Ontario’s Metis Nation has no basis for the current and does not represent Metis.

Carney will accompany some of his ministers with Metis leaders, including indigenous service minister Mandi Gul-Most, Crown-Swadeshi Relations Minister Rebecca Altty and Canada-US-US Business Minister Dominic LWC.

Matis Nation British Columbia said it would not participate in the meeting as it wanted full participation, but was invited only as an online observer.
