Carney set to meet with Cabinet for 35% tariff danger response to Trump's 35% tariff

Ottawa – Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet his cabinet for the first time today as US President Donald Trump threatened to impose a new tariff on Canada.

Trump said in a letter to Carney last week that the United States would impose 35 percent tariffs on Canadian goods starting on August 1.

The White House says that the new tariffs will not apply to goods that are in line with the Canada-US-Maxico agreement on business.

Canada has so far formally responded to the latest threat, or to implement the recent steps of Trump on copper imports and to implement the existing levy on steel and aluminum.

Carney and Trump agreed to work towards a new trade and security agreement by 21 July last month, but the US President unilaterally pushed the timeline back to secure a deal.

Carney has also been designed to meet Canada’s premiere next week.
