Canadian student flies to his college twice a week to save on fare

He only takes two classes per week at the university.

A University of British Columbia (UBC) student is making headlines after sharing that he walks to his college twice a week to avoid paying rent. In particular, Tim Chen, a Calgary resident, says it is cheaper to fly to his classes than pay monthly fare in Vancouver. He only takes two classes per week at the university.

The student spends around $150 per round-trip flight, which works out to around $1200 per month (Rs 99,631). Meanwhile, the rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Vancouver will cost them around $2100 (₹1,74,358).

He shared his experience on Reddit, writing, “As the title says, I’m a super commuter at UBC and live in Calgary. I have two days to go to school for class (Tuesday and Thursday), I fly to Vancouver in the morning and return to Calgary at night. I’m flying Air Canada for all of these flights, and for January, I made 7 round trips this way. I found myself saving on rent because in Calgary I don’t have to pay rent (living with my parents) except to pay for utilities, and that’s for over 2k in Vancouver. Much cheaper than renting a 1B.”

While some users were impressed with their decision, others felt that frequent air travel would be too hectic and time-consuming.

One user wrote, “An hour’s journey is not that bad.” But it would be a waste to come to the airport so often. Plus, your schedule will be quite inflexible, I’m sure missing a flight will be a big headache.”

Another commented, “Modern problems need modern solutions!”

A third said: “Imagine how many times this kid flies. He’ll be spending time in the lounge soon, flying business upgrades for free, dear.”

“Honestly doable,” said a fourth. “Flying is very fast and good deals on flights will be much less than fares, meals and other costs.”

On Thursday, UBC’s associate vice-president of student housing and community services Andrew Parr said he feels for students facing the housing crisis, saying it’s a driving force for the school to build housing below market.

”We recognize that finding affordable rental housing in Vancouver and Kelowna is a challenge for some of our students, as it is for others who rent in the communities. In Vancouver, it’s especially difficult,” Mr. Parr said. Daily hive.
