Ottawa-Canada has signed a multi-country statement, seeking Israel to prevent foreign journalists from entering Gaza and local journalists should be preserved in Palestinian areas.
Canada co-established the media Freedom alliance in 2020 and signed dozens of statements on issues in Hong Kong, Sudan and earlier West Bank.
Ottawa was not one of the 27 countries that signed a call for Israel on Thursday to allow “independent foreign media access” in Gaza, and to protect journalists in Israel and Palestinian areas.
Global Affairs Canada said that on Thursday he would provide a statement to the Canadian press, but did not do so, and Canada was added to the statement that evening after media coverage.
The statement came after Canada and others condemned Israel to deliberately kill Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif, after claiming that he led a Hamas cell.
Only the second time Canada did not sign a multi-country statement from the alliance, during the 2021 election campaign.
