The weather can be unpredictable, especially around Diwali. Health experts say that due to ongoing fluctuations in weather, respiratory and sinus related diseases are increasing.
“When the weather changes, especially with a drop in temperature or humidity, the sinus membranes can become irritated or inflamed,” Dr. Prathik Hegde, consultant orthopedic, said in a statement to Only My Health.
Children, the elderly and people with asthma, bronchitis or heart disease are particularly at risk. Even healthy adults are complaining of eye irritation, headache and breathing problems as Delhi’s AQI remains in the ‘severe’ category.
Medicine expert Dr. Neha Vyas explains that change in temperature does not make you fall sick, but the viruses and bacteria present around you actually cause infection.
He said changes in weather conditions can affect your body’s natural defenses, making it easier for germs to attack.
“Changes in body temperature and exposure to seasonal viruses make you more vulnerable to illnesses like the common cold and flu,” said Dr. Tejal Shelat, a Mayo Clinic family medicine resident.
tips to stay safe
As air quality deteriorates and winter increases, doctors are advising residents to take extra precautions to protect their respiratory health.
Use an N95 or N99 mask to protect yourself from air pollution.
Place air purifiers in bedrooms and living areas.
Drink plenty of water to keep your nasal passages and throat moist.
Eat vitamin C-rich foods like oranges, amla and lemon to help your body fight infections.
Take steam and do salt water gargles regularly.
Dr. Kirtiman Mandal, MBBS, MD Internal Medicine, suggests including probiotics and prebiotics in your diet. They are found in yogurt, buttermilk, kimchi, pickles, and fermented foods, as they will keep your body’s immune system strong.
