Bhubaneswar, November 9 (IANS) Campaigning for the crucial by-election for Nuapada assembly constituency ended on Sunday evening.
Speaking to media persons here, Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) RS Gopalan on Sunday said that “the peace period of Naupada by-election started at 4 pm today”.
As per existing rules, political parties are required to enter a ‘silent period’ 48 hours before the end of polling.
He also said that all the political officials and party workers who came from outside the district have left Nuapada.
The CEO told journalists that the polling parties would reach their respective booths by Monday evening.
“The law and order situation in Nuapada is currently under control. There are 47 sensitive booths in the constituency. Adequate number of state police and Central Armed Police Forces personnel have been deployed. Therefore, we expect smooth polling without any law and order situation,” Gopalan said.
Notably, for the smooth conduct of elections, 14 companies of Central Armed Police Forces, five platoons of Odisha State Armed Police and Reserve Police Force, 35 mobile patrol parties, 18 flying squads, 18 static surveillance teams, along with district police officers and personnel, will be deployed in Nuapada for the by-election.
14 candidates are in the fray for the Nuapada by-election to be held on November 11.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Jai Dholakia, son of senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and four-time Nuapada MLA late Rajendra Dholakia, whose sudden demise in September necessitated the bypoll in the constituency.
Meanwhile, main opposition BJD has named senior leader and former minister Snehangini Chhuria as its candidate for the by-election.
Chhuria is a two-time MLA from Attabira constituency in Bargarh district.
Top tribal leader Ghasiram Majhi has been named by Congress as its candidate for Nuapada by-election.
This is the first by-election after the formation of BJP government in the state.
BJP is leaving no stone unturned to influence the voters in its favor.
