California gubernatorial candidate Betty Yee has said she’s open to the idea gender neutral olympics In a new interview.

In a series of pointed questions, Morgan asked: “Would you hold a gender-neutral Olympics – no men’s and women’s categories, just one event everyone can attend?”
Yee replied, “I don’t think we’ll get that tomorrow, but I think it’s worth negotiating.”
When asked further about whether she would like to see a gender-neutral Olympics in L.A., the gubernatorial candidate responded: “If the physicality of the sexes is true to this – including transgender people – yes, it should be gender-neutral. I don’t think we know enough.”

The latest Emerson College Polling survey of California voters in September found Yee trailing the candidates by three percent of the vote. The group includes fellow Democrats katie porterXavier Becerra, a former Congressman, and former US Secretary of Health and Human Services.
His candidacy comes after serving two terms as state comptroller from 2015 to 2023. She also became the Vice Chair of the California Democratic Party in 2021.
Commenting more broadly on the participation of transgender athletes in sports, Yee said: “Everyone is competing in a sport and they come with abilities and maybe there could be a separate league for them, or we could look at ways to not exclude them.
“I’m no sports expert, but… I think transgender female athletes are female athletes, and they should be able to compete.”

Earlier this year, transgender activist Blossom Brown expressed the same sentiment on air with Morgan. When talk of a gender-neutral Olympics came up, she said, “I mean, why not?”
The host expressed surprise and sarcasm at her response, saying, “Congratulations, you’ve deprived all the women of winning a medal. Well done.”

The 2028 Games were in the headlines earlier this month when Donald Trump said he would consider moving the Olympics from LA if he deemed the city unsafe and unprepared.
He told American journalists: “If I thought L.A. wouldn’t be properly prepared, I would take it to some other place.”
A spokesperson for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said in response to Trump’s comments: “The Olympic Games LA28 has the full support of the President of the United States, the Governor of California, and the Mayor of Los Angeles.
“They have all been extremely helpful in the preparations for these Games. This is reflected at the operational level of the administration. There are still three years to go and we are confident that LA28 will be a great Olympic Games.”
