Kolkata, Nov 3 (IANS) A single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court on Monday allowed the West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to hold a rally in Panihati in the state’s North 24 Parganas district on Tuesday, a day when the Trinamool Congress will hold a mega rally against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Kolkata.
The rally of both Trinamool Congress and BJP will be held on the day when the first phase of the three-phase SIR will begin in West Bengal.
While the Trinamool Congress rally in Kolkata will be against the BJP’s alleged attempts to create an atmosphere of fear in West Bengal in the name of SIR, the BJP’s rally in Panihati on the same day is against the Trinamool Congress’s alleged attempts to spread misconceptions about SIR by unnecessarily linking it with the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Incidentally, 57-year-old Pradeep Kar, a resident of Panihati, had allegedly committed suicide last week out of fear over the implementation of NRC in the state.
While Trinamool Congress had held a rally in Panihati last week on this issue, BJP had announced to hold a counter rally at the same place on Tuesday.
However, the police did not allow the BJP to organize the rally in Panihati, which will be led by Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari.
Following this, the state unit of the BJP approached a single-judge bench of Justice Kaushik Chanda of the Calcutta High Court for permission.
After a detailed hearing in the case on Monday, Justice Chanda gave permission for the rally with some conditions.
The single-judge bench said that there will be a maximum participation of 1,000 people in the rally and the organizers will have to ensure that the common people do not face any inconvenience after the rally.
Justice Chanda also directed the police to make proper security arrangements for the rally and ensure law and order stability in the area.
