Kolkata, Nov 19 (IANS) In a blow to the Mamata Banerjee government, the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday allowed Leader of the Opposition (LOP) in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari to hold a public meeting at Memari in East Burdwan district on November 21, rejecting the state’s objection to it. However, Justice Krishna Rao has imposed several conditions for holding the meeting.
While allowing Suvendu’s rally, the judge said that the meeting can be held at Uday Sangh Club grounds in Memari area of East Burdwan district.
The High Court also ordered that the meeting can be held from 2 pm to 7 pm. It directed the police and administration to take care of security on the road leading to the meeting venue of the Leader of the Opposition.
The court also said that Suvendu Adhikari can hold a meeting with a maximum of 5,000 supporters. Also, the judge has ordered that two fire engines should be available with the fire department during the meeting.
It is noteworthy that before knocking on the door of Calcutta High Court, BJP had sought permission from the police for the meeting in Memari. However, the police rejected that application saying that the security arrangements required for this meeting could not be provided at this time. After this the saffron camp approached the High Court.
Earlier, the BJP had similarly approached the High Court seeking permission for Suvendu’s meetings at various places.
A few days ago, Suvendu had participated in the BJP procession from Barnilpur to Curzon Gate in East Burdwan district. Initially, the BJP wanted to take out the procession on November 5. But, after not getting permission from the state administration, the saffron camp approached the High Court.
The state government’s argument was that November 5 is the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak and a lot of people gather in that area on that day. Therefore permission for the procession could not be given.
The BJP then agreed to change the date of the procession and accordingly on 9 November the party took out a procession from Barnilpur to Curzon Gate.
