The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, today approved the expansion of the educational and infrastructure capacity (Building) of five new ILTS, which Andhra Pradesh (IIT Tirupati), Kerala (IIT Palakkkad), Chhattisgarh (IIT Palkkad), Chhattisgarh (IIT Palakkad), Chhattisgarh, Chhattisgarh (IIT Palakkad), Chhattisgarh (Karnataka (HT Dharwad).
The total cost for the same is Rs. 1128.79 crore in a period of four years from 2025-26 to 2028-29.
The cabinet has also approved the construction of 130 faculty posts (Professor IE level 14 and above level) in these ILTs.
Five new state-of-the-art research parks are also coming to strengthen industry-Akadamia linkage.
Implementation Strategy and Goal:
The students’ strength in these IITs will be increased by more than 6500 in the next four years, with a growth of 1364 students in 1 year, 1738 students in 2 years, 1767 students in 3 years and 1707 students in the 4th year under Bachelor of Graduates (UG), Post Graduate (PG) and PhD program.
Beneficiary:
On completion of construction, these five IITs will be able to complete 13,687 students against the current student power of 7,111 i.e. an increase of 6,576 students. With this increase in the total number of seats, more than 6,500 students will now be able to fulfill their aspirations of study in the most prestigious and demanded educational institutions in the country. It will promote nation-building by creating a skilled workforce, running innovation and promoting economic development. It increases social mobility, reduces educational inequality, and strengthens India’s global state.
Employment generation:
Direct employment will be generated through the faculty, administrative staff, researchers and support personnel hiring to manage the increasing number of students and facilities. In addition, the expansion of IIT complexes stimulate local economies by creating demand for housing, transport and services. Increasing number of graduates and post -graduates from IITs carried forward innovation and startup ecosystems, contributing to employment creation in various fields.
States and Districts:
These five IITs are located in the states/UT of Andhra Pradesh (IIT Tirupati), Kerala (IIT Palakkad), Chhattisgarh (IIT Bhilai), Jammu and Kashmir (IIT Jammu) and Karnataka (IIT Dharwad). However, entry into IITs is based on PAN-India and hence this detail will benefit all the states/UTS across the country.
Budget announcement of 2025-26: said:
The total number of students in ’23 ILT has increased from 65,000 to 1.35 lakh in the last 10 years. For more than 6,500 students, additional infrastructure will be created in five ILT launched after 2014. ,

These five new ILTs were established in the states/UT of Andhra Pradesh (IIT Tirupati), Kerala (IIT Palakkad), Chhattisgarh (IIT Bhilai), Jammu and Kashmir (IIT Jammu) and Karnataka (IIT Dharwad). The academic session of ILTS in Palakkad and Tirupati began in 2015-16 and had the remaining three from temporary complexes in 2016-17. These IITs are now working with their permanent complexes.
