Pune’s metro network is set for a major expansion with the Union Cabinet approving Line 4 (Kharadi-Hadapsar-Swargate-Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop-Warje-Manik Bagh) under Phase 2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project.
The decision, taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, November 26, is the second project approved after approval under Phase-2. Line 2A and 2B earlier this year.
Spanning 31.636 km combined with 28 elevated stations, the two corridors will connect major IT hubs, residential areas, commercial areas and educational clusters in East, South and West Pune.
The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 9,857.85 crore, will be completed in five years.
The network will also offer an interchange at Hadapsar Railway Station and future linkages to Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road, thereby strengthening multimodal connectivity with rail and bus systems.
The corridors will run on major arterial roads including Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road and Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway with an aim to reduce congestion.
Daily ridership on both lines is estimated to be 4.09 lakh in 2028, which will increase to more than 11.7 lakh by 2058. Maha-Metro will execute the project, with pre-construction activities such as survey and design work already in progress.
