The Union Cabinet on Wednesday, December 24, approved a major section of the Phase-V (A) expansion of the Delhi Metro, including a 2.3-km corridor connecting Aerocity to Terminal 1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport at an estimated cost of ₹1,419.6 crore.
Once completed, the Aerocity-Airport Terminal section is expected to improve accessibility for passengers traveling to the domestic terminal and reduce congestion on road connectivity to the airport complex.
The Aerocity-Terminal 1 link is one of the three corridors sanctioned under the ₹12,015 crore project, which will add about 16 km and 13 new stations to the capital’s rapid transit network over the next three years.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said the expansion will take the Delhi Metro network beyond a radius of 400 kilometres, increasing connectivity in the central, south and aviation parts of the city.
Work on the extensive Phase-V(A) project is expected to be completed within three years with funding from the Centre, Delhi government and international partners.
The government said construction would be done using tunnel boring machines and the earth pressure balance method to minimize surface disturbance and traffic inconvenience.
According to the official release, the proposed corridors are expected to reduce road congestion, reduce vehicular pollution and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, thereby improving the overall ease of living in the national capital.
