Brown University shooting: Authorities admit it may take ‘some time’ to find killer

Kendall Turner has been identified as one of nine students injured in Saturday’s shooting at Brown University.

Vice President J.D. Vance has paid tribute to Ella Cook, one of two Brown University students killed in Saturday’s shooting.

Vance shared a statement from the College Republicans of America, saying Cook was vice president of the Brown University College Republicans.

“This beautiful young girl was one of the students murdered at Brown University,” Vance Written on X. “It takes special courage to lead an organization of conservatives on the leftist campus, and I am deeply sorry that our country has lost one of its bright young stars. Oh God, grant him eternal rest.”

Authorities announced Sunday that they are releasing a person of interest in a shooting on the Brown University campus.

Now, the search for a suspect is on.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said cnn Investigators were still looking for other leads while the man in question was in custody.

Smiley said, “We didn’t focus all of our attention on that. We certainly wanted to figure it out because we had credible information that merited a full investigation. But other aspects of the investigation remained at full speed while that lead was being explored.”

He added, “I think we were all hoping that maybe this was the one and so, there’s been another emotional shock as we’ve had to refocus, to realize there’s still a few hours to go, hopefully a few hours, but maybe a few days or more ahead.”

As the search for the suspected attacker continues, officials say there will be an increased law enforcement presence in the area.

“Local, state and federal police activity continues to increase in the area as law enforcement continues to investigate and patrol with increased alertness. The Department of Public Safety has more than doubled its staff,” Brown University said in a statement late Sunday.

“Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate and local police have advised that they do not believe there is any immediate threat to Brown or the local community,” the statement said.

The slain students have been identified as Ella Cook and Muhammed Aziz Umarzokov.
