Media lawyer says BBC has right to take Trump’s legal threat ‘seriously’

Media lawyer says BBC has right to take Trump’s threat to sue ‘seriously’

The BBC is right to take Donald Trump’s threat to prosecute “seriously”, a media lawyer has warned. The US President has threatened to seek $1 billion from a corporation over a Panorama documentary episode, claiming he has been “defamed” by selectively editing his January 6, 2021 speech. In an exclusive interview with The Independent, media lawyer Rupert Cowper-Coles explained that the BBC is right to take the lawsuit “seriously”, adding that it would be worrying if British media organizations were ever subject to compensation “close” to the figure presented by Trump’s legal team. However, the US President may face difficulties in suing the corporation over “defamatory” statements on Panorama, partly because the documentary would not have been broadcast in the United States.

Scandal-hit BBC is now more vulnerable than ever, says former boss

A former BBC chief has warned that the criticized public broadcaster is now more vulnerable than ever in the face of the current crisis.

Admitting the editing of a speech by Donald Trump, which prompted the US president to threaten a billion-dollar lawsuit, was “wrong and harmful”, Lord Hall of Birkenhead commented that the corporation had “no institutional bias”.

The independent crossbencher, who served as Director General of the BBC from 2013-2020, also called for an end to the decade-long process of reviewing the broadcaster’s deal or charter, which he suggested could be used as a way to “defund” the organisation.

He argued that preventing the need for future renewals would strengthen the independence of the corporation and would be “a wonderful legacy from this government”.
