British Skeleton star Matt Weston solidifies his status as prime contender for gold next month’s Milan Cortina winter olympicswon the World Cup championship for the third consecutive time.
This extraordinary achievement was achieved at the season finale in Altenburg, Germany. Weston sealed the victory in a rare three-way tie for second with Christoph Grosel and Axel Jungk.
“I’m used to this three-way connection. This is the second time in my career, I think it’s probably the second time I’ve ever seen it. It’s crazy,” Weston commented.
Despite his podium finish, Weston admitted he wasn’t entirely satisfied with his performance.
“I’m not too happy with my slide today. It wasn’t my best day on the track, but still finishing in a three-way tie for silver is a cool way to end the season,” he added.
Weston ended the season with an impressive 1545 points, ahead of China’s Yin Zheng (1328 points) and compatriot Marcus Wyatt (1276 points). He’s had success as he continues to recover from a torn quadriceps.
“I’m back from the injury now. As with any type of training, there are little hiccups here, there, here and there and I’m working on those,” he explained.
With the Olympics quickly approaching, Weston is now focused on staying healthy.
“I was basically just looking after myself until Cortina, really. But I mean, yeah, what a crazy season it has been,” he said.
Weston, 28, hopes to lead Team GB to medal glory at next month’s Olympics in Italy, having emerged from Beijing with just two medals (one gold and one silver) four years ago.
The skeleton competition of the Milan Cortina Games will be held in Cortina d’Ampezzo from February 9th to 15th. Belgium’s Kim Meylemans won the overall women’s title on Thursday.
