British-owned ship damaged in drone strike off Yemen coast

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have been harassing Red Sea shipping for months.

Dubai:

A British cargo ship was damaged in a drone strike near rebel-controlled Yemen, a maritime security firm said on Tuesday, the latest of dozens of incidents in the Red Sea.

The Barbados-flagged vessel “allegedly suffered minor damage to the port side” in an attack west of Hodeidah, British company Ambre said, adding that there were no casualties.

The ship accelerated and performed an “evasive maneuver” before continuing south toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the company said.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who control much of the war-torn country, have been harassing Red Sea shipping for months to protest Israel’s war with Hamas.

Their attacks triggered retaliation from U.S. and British forces, including a wave of airstrikes on dozens of targets late Saturday.
