this Yellow warning for ice and snow It will be in effect from 6am on Thursday, January 1, to 11.59pm on Friday, January 2, covering the Northern Territory Scotland.
this weather The agency warned that frequent heavy snowfalls in the region could cause travel disruptions, with snow accumulations of up to 30 centimeters possible on the highest routes and hills.
A yellow warning for ice and snow covers a large area from midnight to noon on Friday. England and Walesinclude chester and greater manchester drop to London and kent.
Meanwhile, residents in the Midlands, Tayside and Fife, the Grampians, Highlands and Eileansial, Orkney and Shetland and Strathclyde areas in northern Scotland can expect snow and icy weather to ring in the New Year on Thursday morning.
Regarding the weather in the areas covered by the warning, the Met Office said: “Snow showers will gradually turn to snow on Thursday as strong, possibly locally gale, northerly winds move in.”
“Initial snow accumulation will mainly affect higher routes, but by evening some snow will start to accumulate and even reach lower levels, with 2 to 5 centimeters of snow accumulating by Friday morning, with localized accumulations of up to 10 centimeters.
“Above 200m 10-20cm of snow is possible in some places, while on the highest routes and hills 30cm or more of snow is possible during this period. Some serious drifting snow is possible given the strength of the wind.”
Mark Sidaway, deputy chief forecaster at the Met Office, added: “As we move into the New Year it looks certain that we will get a taste of ‘winter’, first in the north but across the UK in the first week of 2026.”
“Arctic air and strong northerly winds will bring cold or very cold weather across the UK, which will feel particularly cold in strong winds. Widespread and locally severe frost is expected, with many people also experiencing the first snow of winter.
“A yellow warning for snow and ice is in place for New Year’s Day and beyond across northern Scotland, where frequent heavy snowfall may cause some travel disruption.
“As we move into the New Year, these cold weather and winter hazards – snow, ice and strong winds – will develop more widely and more snow and ice warnings are likely. It looks like this cold snap will continue into at least the first week of January, so it’s important that people stay up to date on the latest forecasts and warnings.”
The UK Health and Safety Agency (UKHSA) has also issued an Amber Cold Health Alert for health authorities, covering the North East and North West of England until January 5. All other areas of England will be under a yellow alert during this period.
Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, said: “As the weather turns colder, it’s vital that we understand our most vulnerable friends, family and neighbours.
“Forecast temperatures could have serious health consequences for some people, leading to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and chest infections, particularly for people over 65 and those with pre-existing health conditions.”
UKHSA has warned that demand for health services is likely to increase across regions. The report said that because even young people can be affected by the weather, falling temperatures could put vulnerable people at greater risk, while falling temperatures in places such as hospitals and nursing homes could push them below recommended levels for assessing health risks.
It also warned that external factors such as travel delays could lead to staffing issues and said other industries such as transportation and energy could start to be affected by the weather.
