BrewDog announces closure of distilling brand, sparking job concerns

Employment concerns among beverage companies are growing brewdogThe company will close all of its distilling brands, including Duo Rum, Abstrakt Vodka and Lonewolf Gin produced at its Ellon distillery in Aberdeenshire.

The company, which was founded in 2007, said it decided to focus on its beer brands, including its popular Punk IPA. Its Wonderland cocktail range will also remain.

The distillation unit will cease operations over the coming months to sell off remaining inventory and meet its supply commitments.

The future of the distillery building itself will be reviewed at a later date.

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to cease production of our distilled brands other than Wonderland Cocktails.” brewdog explain.

“This will allow us to sharpen our focus on the continued growth of our beers and Wonderland.

“We are incredibly proud of what the brewery team has built and would like to thank everyone who has worked, contributed and supported the brewing business over the years.”

Gordon and Buchan Conservative MP Harriet Cross expressed concern about the move but acknowledged the difficulties faced by the drinks industry.

She said: “The news of the closure of BrewDog’s distilling business is deeply concerning.

“BrewDog employees whose jobs are now at risk are understandably very concerned.

“This decision highlights the growing issues facing the drinks and hospitality industries, with challenging market conditions leading to financial difficulties.

“Residents in Elon and the surrounding area rely on the employment opportunities provided by BrewDog, and such layoffs by an important local business is deeply disturbing to the region.

“I will now be writing to BrewDog to ask what impact this closure will have on employment and whether this decision will affect any other part of its business.”
