He said: “There’s no doubt that having the ability to make it harder for someone to work illegally is absolutely important. But the concept of a digital ID that makes it even more difficult for someone to try and be in a working position is, I think, potentially an advantage.
“I think it’s going to be really important, and I know there’s going to be a consultation process that will work on how this could work and add value to the work we’re doing.”
A Liberal Democrat spokesperson said: “As the Border Security Commander himself has made clear, the list of Brexit supporting achievements is exactly zero items long. We doubt this will be the last time Farage and Reform are proven wrong. Now is the time for the public to know about it.”
Mr Hewitt was appointed as Britain’s first border security commander last September when the new Labor government came to power.
