Sajid Akram traveled on an Indian passport. Australian Immigration Bureau spokesperson Dana Sandoval said the couple listed Davao as their destination upon arriving in the Philippines. Davao, a sprawling city on the east coast of Mindanao – the largest southern island – is located in an area where Islamic militants have historically operated in the poor central and southwestern regions.
Ms Sandoval said: “Sajid Akram, a 50-year-old Indian citizen, and Naved Akram, a 24-year-old Australian citizen, arrived in the Philippines together from Sydney, Australia last November 1, 2025.”
The Philippine military said it could not confirm whether Akram received weapons training during his visit.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has spoken to her Philippine counterpart Tess Lazaro and informed her about the ongoing investigation.
Mr Lanyon said the vehicle associated with the youth contained improvised explosive devices and “two homemade ISIS flags”.
According to sources cited by ABC, investigators are now probing whether Akram had links to any international terror networks.

Mister Albanese Said that a six-month ASIO investigation found “no evidence” that the father or son had been radicalized.
