Srinagar, Oct 9 (IANS) The body of one of the two missing soldiers was recovered from Kokernag area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Thursday, while a search operation is underway to trace the other. The officers provided this information.
The body of a paratrooper, who went missing during an anti-terrorist operation in the upper reaches of Kokernag in south Kashmir on Tuesday, was recovered along with his rucksack and service weapon.
The soldier, who was part of a search and cordon operation (CASO) launched in the mountainous area earlier this week, is believed to have died after an avalanche or snowstorm hit the high-altitude region three days ago, officials said.
The identity of the deceased soldier has not been officially revealed yet.
Army paratroopers working in adverse weather conditions were hit by a sudden snow storm. Following the incident, contact was lost with the two personnel, prompting immediate rescue efforts despite challenging terrain and low visibility.
The army said that a large-scale search operation is going on to trace the second missing soldier. Despite inclement weather and difficult topography, joint teams of Army and Police are engaged in locating the missing personnel.
The joint forces, including Army, other security forces and specially trained commandos of Jammu and Kashmir Police, are carrying out aggressive counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir to destroy the entire ecosystem of terror.
After chairing a high-level security review meeting on Jammu and Kashmir in New Delhi on Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated the central government’s resolve to make Jammu and Kashmir terror-free.
After this, Amit Shah said on Twitter, “Reviewed the security of Jammu and Kashmir with the Lieutenant Governor and other senior officials.”
“We are committed to weaken the terror ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir. Our security forces will have complete freedom to crush any attempt to threaten peace and security in the region. Instructions have been given to further intensify vigilance and coordination to accelerate progress towards Modi ji’s vision of a terror-free Jammu and Kashmir.”
