In a late statement on Wednesday, the force said: “On Wednesday 30 July evening, there are emergency services teams in the recovery of two bodies from under the cliff in Whitbi Abe.
“A member of the public called the police at 7.16 am after spotting a man and woman on the below rocks.
“With the tide coming in fast, Costguard coordinated a helicopter recovery to the ambulance crew near Whitbi Abe. It was completed at 8.24 am.
“Paramedics confirmed the deaths, and the bodies were rushed to the hospital by ambulance.
“The police is running with the detection of the male and the next family of the woman, while the investigation continues under the sudden death circumstances for a coroner report.”
