BJP’s Nand Kishore Yadav elected unopposed as Bihar Assembly Speaker

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Nand Kishore Yadav was elected unopposed as Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Thursday. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav accompanied the new Speaker as he took office.

Kumar congratulated Nand Kishore Yadav and said he is an experienced leader. “You (Speaker) are an experienced leader. I congratulate you on your election. You have the support of all MLAs. I believe you will hear the voices of both sides, whether it is ruling or opposing”.

The leader of the opposition expressed hope that the new speaker would also listen to the opinions of the opposition. “You are a very senior leader and I am sure you will remain impartial and listen to the opposition,” Tejashwi Yadav said.

Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhry and Vijay Kumar Sinha congratulated Yadav on his election as the Speaker of the State Assembly. “You are our senior leader and you come from the land of Guru Govind Singh Ji. We all thank our central leadership for this,” Chaudhry said.

“We congratulate you on this new role. You are a very senior leader… and we will learn from your experience,” Sinha said. Yadav, a seven-time MLA from Patna Sahib assembly constituency, filed his nomination for the speakership on Tuesday, a day after his predecessor, RJD’s Awadh Bihari Choudhary Defeated in a no-confidence motion.

After Chaudhry was removed as Speaker, JD(U) Deputy Speaker Maheshwar Hazari presided over the proceedings of the House. Patna Sahib, the constituency that Yadav represented for several consecutive terms, is named after the Sikh holy shrine where the tenth Guru was born.

Yadav started his political career in 1978, became Patna Municipal Councilor in 1982, and became Patna Deputy Mayor in 1982. Yadav was first elected as an MLA in 1995 and served several times as a minister in the Nitish Kumar government. past. The BJP’s choice of Yadav for the Speaker’s post is seen as an attempt to strike a balance between the Extremely Backward Classes (EBC), Other Backward Classes (OBC) and upper castes in the new ruling dispensation.
