Guwahati, Nov 14 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday mocked Rahul Gandhi for the grand old party’s election defeat and NDA’s impressive performance in Bihar, saying the Congress leader is the BJP’s biggest “star campaigner”.
Speaking to reporters here, CM Sarma said, “I had repeatedly mentioned the fact during the election campaign in Bihar that wherever Rahul Gandhi campaigns, the BJP is set to win those seats. This is true, and if Rahul Gandhi decides to campaign in Assam, we will welcome him as he will ensure BJP’s victory in the upcoming assembly elections.”
The Chief Minister also took a dig at the recent meeting of opposition parties to form a united front to put up a strong fight against the BJP in the next elections.
He said, “The meeting of opposition parties was actually called to discuss the marriage of an opposition leader. We should not worry about the opposition parties here and more importantly, if Akhil Gogoi is present somewhere, then there should be a disaster.”
Notably, in a spectacular election verdict that strengthened the National Democratic Alliance’s strong hold on Bihar, the ruling alliance won a massive majority, demolishing the majority mark of 122.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United), the NDA’s numbers were strengthened by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Voter turnout increased to 67.14 percent, up nearly 10 percentage points from 2020, indicating strong participation amid a high level of campaigning.
In sharp contrast, the opposition grand alliance comprising Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress and Left parties was wiped out.
The alliance’s pivot RJD got less than 40 seats, while the Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation suffered heavy defeats.
The NDA’s 47.2 per cent vote share dwarfed the grand alliance’s steady 37.3 per cent, a marginal increase from 37.23 per cent in 2020, showing how vote efficiency and consolidation propelled the incumbent to victory while fragmenting the opposition base.
This analysis, based on data from Election Commission of India trends, coalition arithmetic and expert analyses, sheds light on the subtle dynamics behind the electoral disaster of the Grand Alliance.
The Grand Alliance’s defeat stemmed from a toxic mix of internal weaknesses, strategic blunders and the NDA’s skillful counter-action, which turned anti-incumbency whispers into non-starters.
