Bengaluru, Oct 21 (IANS) The Karnataka BJP has said it will question the Congress-led state government’s decision to withdraw criminal cases against persons involved in alleged illegal cow transportation and attacking police in court.
Speaking to the media in Bengaluru on Tuesday, Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly R. Ashok criticized this step of the government and gave a statement in this regard.
R. “In a recent cabinet meeting, it was decided to cancel the cases against 30 people involved in the slaughter of cows and transportation of beef in Chittapur taluk of Kalaburagi district,” Ashok claimed.
Ashok alleged that the transportation was done by a gang led by Sheikh Mohisin. “The police caught them red-handed while illegally transporting cows and brought the vehicle to the police station,” he said.
Ashok said, “Later they entered the police station, quarreled with the police and demanded to release the cows. They also pelted stones. A case was registered in this regard.”
He further alleged that RDPR, IT and BT Minister Priyank Kharge had submitted a letter to the government demanding the release of people involved in illegal cow transportation and had urged the Cabinet to withdraw criminal cases against them.
“On the basis of this letter, all the police cases have been withdrawn. Earlier, they had also withdrawn the cases against the rioters who attacked the Hubli police station. After facing public backlash, that case is still being investigated by the court,” he said.
Ashok claimed that Kharge in his letter had declared the accused innocent and the cabinet’s decision to withdraw the cases was based on that.
Ashok taunted, “This Congress-led government keeps chanting the names of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. BR Ambedkar. Gandhi had strongly opposed cow slaughter. In such a situation, what importance are you giving to his principles? This government has no shame.”
“If these people are released, they will return to the same activities – cow theft and illegal transportation. We will approach the court, and like the case of attack on Hubli police station, we are confident that justice will be done here too,” Ashok asserted.
Responding to the Congress leadership’s claim that the ban on private organizations conducting activities in public places was originally imposed by the former BJP government led by CM Jagadish Shettar, Ashok challenged them.
“Let them show Jagadish Shettar’s signature on any such order. This is being done to target the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) without directly naming the Cabinet,” he said.
Ashok said, “The ban was never discussed in the cabinet during our tenure. This order was related to a school in Bengaluru.”
He further took a jibe at Minister Priyank Kharge. “I saw Priyank Kharge asking who was the CM at that time. I want to ask him – who was the CM when an official signed and allotted 16 sites to CM Siddaramaiah’s family through Mysore Urban Development Authority?”
