The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formally unveiled the schedule for the election of its next national president, the process of which will conclude on January 20.

The nomination window for the top organizational post will open on January 19, while the name of the new party chief is expected to be announced the next day, news agency PTI reported.

The election timetable was released by BJP’s national returning officer K Laxman.

As per the schedule, nominations can be filed between 2 pm to 4 pm on January 19. Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place between 4 pm to 5 pm on the same day, while candidates can withdraw their nominations between 5 pm to 6 pm.

According to PTI, Laxman said, “If needed, voting will be held on January 20 and the name of the new BJP national president will be officially announced on the same day.”

Nitin Nabin likely to be elected

BJP national working president Nitin Nabin is likely to be elected unopposed as there is little indication of any other leader contesting the election, PTI quoted party sources as saying.

The senior party leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is believed to be supporting his candidature.

If elected, Nabin will succeed JP Nadda, who has held the post since January 2020. Notably, according to PTI, Nadda had followed a similar path after being appointed as the national working president of the BJP for the first time in June 2019 before being elected unopposed as the party chief.

Political background and experience

45-year-old Nitin Nabin hails from Bihar and represents Bankipur assembly constituency. He has been a minister in Bihar government twice.

Son of late BJP veteran and former MLA Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, he is regarded as a leader with a strong ideological base within the organisation.

Nabin has a long-standing association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and is considered deeply committed to organizational work. According to PTI, if his elevation is confirmed, a generational change is expected in the top leadership structure of the party.
