BJP selects Hemant Soren's sister-in-law Sita Soren for Dumka seat in Jharkhand

The BJP has announced the names of three candidates in Jharkhand, including former JMM MLA from Dumka (ST) constituency and Sita Soren, sister-in-law of former chief minister Hemant Soren Sita Soren.

The party announced on March 2 that sitting MP Sunil Soren, who defeated JMM chief Shibu Soren by a margin of 47,590 votes in the 2019 polls, would seek re-election in Dumka.

Sita Soren joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on March 20 on the grounds that Jharkhand’s ruling Mukti Morcha, a three-time MLA and party patriarch Shib ·The eldest daughter-in-law of Shibu Soren, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on the grounds that she was “isolated” and “neglected” by the JMM after her death. Husband Durga Soren in 2009.

Dumka will go to the polls on June 1.

The party announced that Kalicharan Singh and Dhuru Mahato will contest from the other two seats of Chhatra and Dhanbad respectively.

In Chhatra, the BJP expressed confidence over Kalicharan Singh’s refusal to invoice sitting MP Sunil Kumar Singh, who won by 3.77 lakh votes. In Dhanbad, too, the party dropped sitting MP Pashupati Nath Singh, who had been representing the seat since 2009, fielding Baghmara MLA Duru Mah Baghmara MLA Dulu Mahato.

Mr Mahato became MLA in 2009 with the support of former Chief Minister Babulal Marandi’s Jharkhand Vikash Morcha (JVM). The man, who joined the BJP in 2014, has been accused in more than two dozen cases.

Voting will be held in Chatra and Dhanbad on May 20 and May 25 respectively.

The BJP has named 11 nominees from Jharkhand in its first list of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, including four new candidates – former Congress MP Geeta Kola (Singhbhum ST constituency ), members of the House of Federation Samir Oraon, Tara Marandi and Manish Jaiswal.

Seven other candidates announced earlier will seek re-election in their respective districts. They include Union Ministers Arjun Munda (Khunti ST) and Annapurna Devi (Koderma).

Jharkhand has 14 assembly constituencies and according to the seat-sharing arrangement between the BJP and the AJSU party, the Giridih seat has been reserved for the AJSU party.

Currently, Giridih is represented by Chandra Prakash Chaudhary of the AJSU party.
