Kolkata, Oct 27 (IANS) The Central government has upgraded the security arrangements of Khagen Murmu, BJP’s Lok Sabha member from Malda (North) constituency in West Bengal’s Malda district, following a serious attack allegedly by Trinamool Congress workers in the northern region of the state earlier this month.
Murmu, from now on, will be eligible for the “Y Plus” category security provided by the Central Government.
On October 7, the vehicle of Murmu and BJP chief whip in the West Bengal Assembly Shankar Ghosh was attacked allegedly by Trinamool Congress workers at Bamundanga in Jalpaiguri district while they were going to Nagarakata with relief material for flood-affected people in the area.
Murmu was seriously injured in that attack, after which he had to spend a lot of time in the hospital. Ghosh also suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized for a few days.
A BJP state committee member said that after the attack, a petition was sent by the party’s state unit to the Union Home Ministry to upgrade the security arrangements for Murmu.
“The Union Home Ministry also feels that the security arrangements for Murmu need to be upgraded and hence it has decided to provide ‘Y+’ security for him,” the state committee member said.
Earlier, in view of the apprehension of danger, the security arrangements of Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari were also upgraded several times since 2020.
In 2024, the officer’s security cover was upgraded twice – first in October and then in December. In October, the Union Home Ministry expanded his Z category security, which was earlier restricted to West Bengal, to cover him across India, following an intelligence report of a growing threat to his life.
Again in December last year, the Union Home Ministry upgraded his security arrangements within West Bengal, and the CAPF detail covering his convoy and public appearances was increased to at least 22 armed personnel.
