Kolkata, Nov 26 (IANS) The West Bengal unit of the BJP on Wednesday approached the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court for permission to hold a rally in Changarabandha, a census town close to the India-Bangladesh border in Cooch Behar district in the northern region of West Bengal.
The state unit of the BJP moved court after the Cooch Behar district police refused to grant permission for the rally.
Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to lead a rally titled “Parivartan Sankalp Yatra” in Changarabandha.
The writ petition filed by the West Bengal unit of the BJP has been accepted and the matter is expected to be heard on Thursday or Friday. The scheduled date of “Parivartan Sankalp Yatra” is 29th November.
The Cooch Behar district leadership of the BJP claimed that they had already submitted a written application to the local Mekhliganj police station for permission for the rally. Local BJP leader Dodhiram Roy claimed, “However, neither did they give us permission for the rally nor did they give us the copy of our application in this regard.”
He also alleged that since the proposed “Parivartan Sankalp Yatra” would be led by opposition leaders, the police had deliberately refused to allow the rally.
Roy said, “The police authorities have always refused to allow any rally led by the leader of the opposition anywhere in the state. Every time, we have to approach the Calcutta High Court for permission and only then we get permission. The same happened this time too. We are confident of getting permission from the court for the ‘Parivartan Sankalp Yatra’ on November 29.”
