Kolkata, Nov 15 (IANS) BJP leaders and workers in two districts of West Bengal were either attacked, allegedly by Trinamool Congress workers, or arrested by the police as they celebrated the landslide victory of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Bihar elections.
Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari had issued a social media statement on Saturday morning claiming that Cooch Behar BJP’s organization district secretary Ajay Roy was harassed, dragged and arrested by the police in Dinhata in Cooch Behar district for allegedly publicly celebrating the NDA’s victory in the Bihar Assembly elections.
Opposition leaders accused Udayan Guha, West Bengal’s minister in-charge of the North Bengal Development Department, of conspiring to harass Roy and subsequently arrest him.
According to the official, Guha, who was referred to as a “criminal” by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in the 2021 post-poll violence case before the Calcutta High Court, had “directed the state police to arrest Roy”.
“The Trinamool Congress party habitually misuses the police everywhere to vent its frustration against BJP leaders,” the official said.
Despite repeated attempts, Guha was not available for comments.
In another incident, a group of around 50 people attacked and injured around 12 BJP workers on Friday at Diamond Harbor in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district while they were celebrating the NDA’s victory in Bihar.
The BJP district leadership alleged that the attackers were close associates of the ruling Trinamool Congress.
BJP workers celebrating NDA’s victory in Bihar were reportedly injured in that attack and are currently undergoing treatment in a local hospital.
In both the cases, there has been no response yet from Trinamool Congress or the district police administration.
