Guwahati, Oct 9 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the state’s BJP government is doing a great job in providing justice to Zubeen Garg, who died untimely while swimming in the sea in Singapore last month.
Sarma told reporters here, “Initially it was thought that those responsible for the sudden demise of our beloved Zubeen Garg would get away with bail. But now, people can see that we have arrested five people, including the singer’s cousin Sandipan Garg. The BJP-led government has taken immediate action and we have put those people behind bars. We will leave no stone unturned to get justice for Zubeen Garg.”
The chief minister also hit out at the opposition and said, “When the Congress was in power in Assam, it took them at least three days to decide the cremation site of Bhupen Hazarika. Such was the level of efficiency of the government then, whereas now we have arrested all the five accused in the untimely death of Zubeen Garg.”
Notably, the Assam Police officer and cousin of Zubeen Garg was sent to seven days of police custody following his arrest. The late iconic singer’s cousin Sandipan Garg is a Deputy Superintendent in the Assam Police Service. He was also at the yacht party in Singapore on September 19 where the music maestro tragically died while swimming in the sea.
Zubeen Garg went to Singapore to participate in the Northeast India Music Festival and Sandipan Garg also accompanied him to enjoy the event.
Earlier, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing Zubeen Garg’s death had interrogated the arrested Assam Police officer for the last one week. Sandipan Garg was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kamrup district, who sent him to seven-day police custody.
“We sought 14 days’ police custody of Sandipan Garg; however, the court granted seven days’ custody. Since the investigation is ongoing, I cannot give further details about Garg’s arrest,” the SIT led by CID special DGP MP Gupta told reporters here.
Gupta also noted that Singapore-based Assamese man Roop Kamal Kalita appeared before the SIT for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, while the CID is preparing to send fresh summons to other NRI persons who were present on the boat on September 19.
On October 1, the team arrested Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma and event organizer Shyamkanu Mahant, who had coordinated the concert in Singapore, where the singer was to perform. Both were booked under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Subsequently, two of Zubeen’s bandmates – composer Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and singer Amritprabha Mahanta – were taken into custody and sent to 14-day police custody for further questioning.
