Chennai, Nov 15 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday said the Bihar Assembly election result, though decisive, cannot erase the “misdeeds and careless actions” of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
In a strongly worded statement posted on Twitter, he stressed that the credibility of the election body has fallen unprecedentedly low and stressed the need for a more transparent and impartial institution that can inspire confidence across the entire political spectrum.
Stalin, who is also the DMK chief, said the Bihar result, which gave a clear victory to veteran leader Nitish Kumar, holds important lessons for political parties and the larger democratic process.
Congratulating the Bihar chief minister-designate for his landslide victory, he also lauded RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav for his “tireless and spirited campaign” which enthused the voters, especially the youth.
The DMK chief underlined that election results are rarely decided by any single factor. Instead, they reflect a combination of welfare delivery, effective social coalitions, ideological clarity and strength of political messaging, he said, adding that the Bihar mandate has once again shown that people respond to consistent governance, clear communication and credible leadership.
Stalin said the India Bloc, of which DMK is a major component, comprises senior leaders who are fully capable of interpreting the political message emanating from Bihar. He stressed that the alliance should do strategic introspection to meet the rising expectations of the voters before the next election cycle.
According to him, dedicated management “until the final vote is cast” remains central to any successful campaign.
Returning to his criticism of the ECI, he reiterated that the institution cannot afford to lose public trust at a time when democratic accountability is under intense scrutiny. He stressed that the Commission’s functioning should “instill confidence even among those who do not win”, warning that the erosion of confidence in the election body ultimately undermines India’s democratic foundations.
Stalin’s comments come amid a growing debate in opposition circles over the conduct of the recent elections, with many leaders arguing that electoral institutions should be strengthened to ensure fairness, transparency and public trust in the world’s largest democracy.
