Chandigarh, Nov 14 (IANS) Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda on Friday said the election results in Bihar were not in accordance with public sentiments and the Grand Alliance did not expect such a result.
He said, “Congress will carefully analyze the reasons for the defeat in Bihar and conduct a thorough review.”
Responding to a media question in Jhajjar city, Hooda said that as a responsible opposition in Haryana, it is the duty of the Congress to raise issues related to public welfare.
He said, “That is why the Congress Legislature Party has submitted a memorandum to the Governor demanding action on the losses suffered by farmers due to heavy rains, irregularities in paddy procurement, increasing crime in the state and corruption in ration card distribution.”
Hooda said the recent heavy rains across the state have caused widespread damage to crops.
“Large areas of paddy, cotton and other kharif crops have been submerged, leaving farmers facing severe financial distress. Many farmers’ entire crops have been destroyed, yet the government has not conducted a proper survey nor announced any meaningful compensation. This year’s crops have been destroyed by excessive rainfall, and many areas remain waterlogged, making it impossible to plant the next crop.”
Hooda, who has been Chief Minister twice, demanded that the government conduct special Girdawari and give compensation to farmers at the rate of Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 per acre.
He said that although the government claims to provide minimum support price (MSP) for 24 crops, the situation is far from the reality.
“There are many crops like paddy, millet, moong and cotton for which farmers are not getting MSP at all. In Haryana, farmers are being forced to sell paddy and millet at Rs 500 to Rs 600 per quintal less than the MSP. In such circumstances, keeping in mind the flood losses and distress sales, the government should give a bonus of Rs 1,000 on all crops.”
Hooda said that there have been widespread complaints of irregularities and scams in the government procurement of paddy in the state.
He said, “Farmers are not getting fair prices in many mandis and reports of fake buying and selling have raised serious concerns about transparency. Also, there is an acute shortage of fertilizers and black marketing is taking place on a large scale. The Congress Legislature Party has demanded that the entire matter be investigated by a sitting judge of the Haryana High Court so that the entire truth can be made public.”
