Patna, Oct 30 (IANS) Tension prevailed after a person was allegedly killed in an election-related clash in Mokama in Bihar’s Patna district on Thursday, raising concerns in political circles.
The incident took place near Khushalchak and Basavanchak villages under Samaygarh police station limits under Mokama assembly constituency, considered one of the most high-profile battlegrounds in Bihar this election season.
The deceased has been identified as Dularchand Yadav, a supporter of Jan Suraj leader Piyush Priyadarshi.
After the incident, Jan Suraj leader Piyush Priyadarshi alleged that Dularchand was targeted due to electoral rivalry.
Police have started investigation and said that strict action will be taken against those responsible.
Senior officials including ASP Barh, Rural SP and SSP Patna visited the spot to assess the situation and heavy police force has been deployed to prevent further disturbance.
Former MLA and JDU candidate Anant Singh, considered a strong leader of Mokama, has directly accused former MP Surajbhan Singh of carrying out the incident.
Reacting to the incident, RJD leader and chief ministerial face of the grand alliance, Tejashwi Yadav, condemned the violence and urged all parties to maintain peace during the elections.
Tejashwi said, “There is no place for violence in a democracy. The Model Code of Conduct is in force, yet people are roaming around with guns and bullets. The Election Commission should take strict action.”
Mokama assembly constituency is seeing a high-stakes contest between Anant Singh (JD-U) and Veena Devi, wife of former RJD MP Suraj Bhan Singh, with both families having significant political influence in the area for decades.
Dularchand Yadav was once considered close to Lalu Prasad Yadav and played an important role in strengthening the grassroots cadre of the RJD during the 1990s.
In recent years, he had increased allegiance to the Jan Suraj movement and developed close relations with Piyush Priyadarshi.
Local people say that Dularchand was famous in Mokama Tal area for his social work and political connections.
Recently, he gained attention after a campaign song he recorded in support of another local leader Lallu Mukhiya went viral on social media.
Police sources said the clash may have been caused by old rivalries and competition for local dominance during the election campaign.
Officials said late Thursday evening that the situation in Mokama remained tense, though under control.
