Patna, October 31 (IANS) After the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) released its 24-point manifesto for the Bihar Assembly elections, former MP and 15th Finance Commission Chairman NK Singh said that the focus of this election should be on the economic future and sustainable development of Bihar.

Speaking about Bihar’s development trajectory, Singh told IANS that the state is often described as one of the most backward states in India, but people overlook the substantial progress made in recent years.

“When it comes to Bihar, it is counted among the most backward states in the country. It is low on parameters like education, health, infrastructure and manufacturing, but people forget two major things – there has been huge progress in the last few years,” Singh said.

He highlighted that Bihar’s nominal gross domestic product (GDP) has grown by 22 per cent in the current financial year, while the population growth rate is under control at 1.4 per cent, leading to an increase in per capita income of about 20 per cent.

“Earlier, the growth in per capita income used to be only 1-2 per cent annually. Now, it has increased to almost 20 per cent – which is remarkable,” Singh said.

Explaining the factors behind this growth, Singh credited the better financial management of the state government.

He said both the NDA manifesto and the Grand Alliance have made promises that are fiscally responsible and achievable.

“Whichever government comes to power will be able to implement the commitments made in the manifesto,” he said.

Emphasizing the importance of continuity and investment, Singh said it would be important to maintain the current pace of growth in the next five years and attract investors with confidence in the state’s business environment.

He also stressed the need for stronger coordination between the state and central governments, especially for Bihar, which still requires significant central assistance for infrastructure projects.

Singh concluded, “Bihar needs support from the Center for road, rail and air connectivity. The state alone cannot bear the financial burden of such projects. A responsible government both in the state and at the Center can accelerate Bihar’s development from here.”
