Patna, Nov 14 (IANS) AIMIM is performing strongly in Bihar’s Seemanchal region, with early trends at 2 pm indicating lead in five assembly constituencies.
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the party is ahead in Jokihat (Araria), Kochadhaman (Kishanganj), Amour (Purnea), Baisi (Purnea), and Thakurganj (Kishanganj).
Notably, four of these seats – Jokihat, Kochadhaman, Amour and Baisi – were also won by the party in the 2020 assembly elections. The trend is significant for AIMIM, which is attempting to expand its presence in Bihar.
After walking out of the India block, party chief Asaduddin Owaisi had expressed his intention to contest 100 seats in the state.
However, on 19 October, AIMIM formally announced a list of 25 candidates, including two non-Muslims, indicating an effort to broaden its appeal beyond its traditional support base.
In the last election, AIMIM had pulled off a surprise victory by winning five seats, all of them located in Seemanchal – Amour, Baisi, Jokihat, Kochadhaman and Bahadurgarh in Kishanganj.
The region includes the districts of Araria, Katihar, Kishanganj and Purnia, has 24 assembly constituencies and is home to a large part of Bihar’s Muslim population.
AIMIM was counting on this demographic to maintain its relevance in the political landscape of the state.
After the 2020 results, four MLAs from Owaisi joined the RJD, leaving only Amour’s Akhtarul Iman with the party. Iman is currently leading from his constituency once again, thereby strengthening AIMIM’s hold in its stronghold.
The ruling NDA is headed for a massive victory in the Bihar Assembly elections, with latest trends showing the alliance crossing the 200-seat mark as of 2 pm.
Meanwhile, according to early trends from the Election Commission of India (ECI) at 2 pm, BJP is emerging as the largest party with a lead on 91 seats, while JDU is at second place with 79 seats.
Alliance partners – LJP (RV) is leading on 22 seats, Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) is leading on four seats and HAMS is also leading on four seats.
At present the Grand Alliance is at 36th position, which is its worst performance till date.
