Patna, November 21 (IANS) For the first time in two decades, the Home Department in Bihar has gone out of the control of Nitish Kumar. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary is now the head of the ministry, he has got full authority over the law and order machinery of Bihar.
With this, the entire police administration – from DGP to ADG, IG, SP and DSP will report directly to him.
The change has sparked political discussion, especially because Samrat Chaudhary has repeatedly talked about adopting a UP-style crackdown on crime.
During the election campaign, he had warned that criminals in Bihar would face strict action and had openly referred to the “UP model” implemented under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
With his appointment, speculations have intensified regarding the possibility of encounters, bulldozer action and strict policing measures in Bihar.
Samrat Chaudhary will have the final authority in cases of major crimes, riots, communal tension, public disorder and major arrests across the state.
The Home Minister will approve postings and transfers of IPS and senior officers including SP, DIG, IG and will also impose suspension where necessary.
This administrative power is considered one of the most influential instruments in state governance.
Operations in Naxal-affected districts, including strategies like Operation Green Hunt, will require the approval of the Home Minister.
The decision to deploy CID, STF or SOG against mafia groups, gangs and organized crime networks will also come under their jurisdiction.
With the Home Department coming under the BJP for the first time in many years, there is expected to be a significant change in the political and administrative direction of law enforcement in Bihar.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar distributed departments among his ministers.
He reached Raj Bhavan around 3.30 pm and handed over the list of departments to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan.
The new cabinet includes 14 ministers from BJP, eight from JDU, two from LJP (RV) and one each from RLM and HAM.
