Biden and Trump win Louisiana presidential primary

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump won Louisiana’s primary on Saturday, picking up more delegates after clinching their party’s nomination.

Biden is also running in Missouri’s Democratic primary, the results of which are not expected to be announced until next week.

There is no suspense in the game. Biden and Trump defeated their primary rivals. But the primary is still closely watched by insiders for turnout and signs of protesting voters.

For Biden, some liberals have expressed anger over Israel’s war against Hamas following the Oct. 7 attack. According to reports, more than 30,000 people have been killed by Gaza authorities since the Israeli offensive began, two-thirds of them women and children. The protest movement started by Michigan’s Arab-American community has spread to several other states.

Trump is the party’s dominant figure and has locked up the Republican nomination for a third consecutive time. But he faces dissent from those who worry about the significant legal risks he faces or criticize his White House tenure. His White House term ended shortly after his supporters launched an insurrection on January 6, fueled by his false theories of election fraud.

Saturday’s primary is Missouri Democrats’ first partisan presidential contest since the new law took effect in August 2022. Louisiana’s primary, meanwhile, comes nearly four years after the state was the first to postpone its primary due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
