Bhamakalapam 2 review: Priyamani shows off her charm in this lackluster sequel

‘Bhamakalapam’ (2022) proved to be an unexpected hit for OTT platform AHA and marked the comeback of Priyamani. Yesterday, its sequel “Bhamakalapam 2” premiered, raising expectations on whether it can replicate the success of its predecessor.

premise

Anupama (Priyamani) is haunted by her past and decides to live a lonely life. She joins hands with the maid Shilpa (played by Sharanya Pradeep) to run a restaurant and decides to participate in the “2023 Dinner Party” organized by the evil tycoon Anthony Lobo (played by Anuj Gurdwara). Cooking Idol” contest. As events take a dark turn, Anupama finds herself being blackmailed by corrupt NCB official Sadanand (Ragu Mukherjee) to steal the competition’s trophy. Anupama’s involvement with Sadanand, his threat to the trophy and the reasons behind Antony’s plan are revealed throughout the film. Ultimately, Anupama’s action resolves the gripping storyline.

OK

The story begins with a brief flashback from the end of Bhamakalapam, but this time the creators have increased the curiosity of the audience by switching the genre from crime comedy to a gripping heist thriller. Priyamani’s performance is outstanding and a highlight of both films. In this sequel, she portrays a more confident, less naive character, demonstrating her versatility as an actor. Sharanya Pradeep’s performance is impressive and she injects humor into the film. The villain played by Raghu Mukherjee is noteworthy and the other actors also perform their roles effectively, enhancing the impact of the film.

Impressive aspects

While the transformation of the franchise into a heist drama is commendable, the execution of the script falls short. Some scenes appear overly dramatic and certain plot twists are predictable, thereby weakening the overall impact. Introducing more unexpected twists might enhance the suspenseful storyline. Saranya Pradeep’s character could have been developed further to add more humor to the serious heist thriller atmosphere. Serat Kapoor’s character seems to be cast primarily for aesthetic appeal, lacking any significant opportunity for a meaningful performance. The film’s pacing struggles to gain momentum, and the climax feels somewhat unconvincing.

technical aspects

Abhimanyu Tadimeti’s direction shows what he’s capable of, although more attention to detail might have improved engagement, especially in the initial parts. The background score by Prasanth R Vihari lacks the suspense-enhancing effect. However, Deepak Yaragra’s cinematography effectively captures the visual richness, complemented by impressive production values. Tighter editing, especially in the first hour, would have enhanced pacing and narrative coherence.

Bhamakalapam 2 is quite entertaining in certain sequences and the performances of Priyamani and Sharanya Pradeep are commendable. However, predictability and pacing issues hinder its overall impact. Fans of the original may find it worth watching, but are advised to adjust expectations accordingly.
