X owner Elon Musk called on Sunday for the resignation or removal of a Brazilian Supreme Court judge whom the billionaire entrepreneur accused of engaging in censorship by blocking accounts suspected of spreading false information.
“This judge has blatantly and repeatedly betrayed the Brazilian Constitution and the people. He should resign or be impeached,” Tesla and SpaceX boss Musk said of Alexandre de Moraes.
Starting Saturday night, Musk launched a series of attacks on justice on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter that he purchased in 2022.
With Moraes threatening to “cut off access to the platform,” “we may lose all revenue in Brazil and have to close our offices there,” Musk posted.
“But principles are more important than profits.”
Moraes, one of 11 members of Brazil’s high court, is a divisive judicial figure, tyrannical to some and a zealous defender of democracy to others. He also presides over the country’s Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE).
Critics, including Musk, say Moraes is part of a sweeping crackdown on free speech in Brazil.
Moraes leads the fight against disinformation in Brazil. In recent years, he has ordered the blocking of the accounts of influential figures on social networks, most of whom are supporters of Jair Bolsonaro.
In 2023, Moraes’ TSE declared the far-right former president ineligible to run for office for spreading disinformation about Brazil’s electoral system.
Bolsonaro is also under investigation for an attempted coup to prevent him from defeating current left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the 2022 election after Bolsonaro Supporters of the group attacked the headquarters of the country’s three authorities in Brasilia.
